Frequently Asked Questions About Medical Treatment in Japan

How much does medical treatment cost in Japan?

If foreigners without Japanese public health insurance receive medical care at Japanese medical institutions, many institutions set fees specifically for foreign patients, and these costs are generally about 2 to 5 times higher than those for Japanese patients.

What types of expenses are included in preliminary medical costs?

Preliminary medical costs vary depending on each hospital’s acceptance criteria. Some hospitals allow direct outpatient appointments and tests, but many require foreign patients to first receive a second opinion before proceeding to the next formal stage of medical treatment.

The first step includes obtaining a second opinion, which does not cover formal tests or treatments. The fee for this step is charged as a fixed amount set by each hospital for the second opinion. If the hospital permits advance booking of tests or treatments at the time of the second opinion, additional preliminary charges for part of the medical fees will be billed as an estimate.

All fees must be prepaid in full before traveling. The prepaid medical fees will be paid to the hospital on behalf of the patient by our company (medical fee proxy payment). After treatment is completed, a final settlement will be made based on the actual medical expenses incurred (additional charges for any shortfall or refunds for any surplus).

How long does it take to receive treatment after consultation?

In Japan, medical treatment is by appointment only. Scheduling appointments at Japanese hospitals can take longer than in other countries. This is mainly because Japanese medical institutions carefully review the medical questionnaire. The waiting time for an appointment may vary depending on the hospital, type of illness, and the chosen doctor. Typically, it takes about 2 to 4 weeks from when you submit your documents until you can travel for treatment.

If the patient themselves can speak Japanese, is it possible to contact a Japanese hospital directly and receive medical treatment?

There are many medical institutions in Japan, but the hospitals that accept foreign patients are limited. Moreover, it is often difficult for foreign patients to contact medical institutions directly. In many cases, even if the patient can speak Japanese, they need to receive medical care through an international medical coordination agency in accordance with the hospital's requirements.

How should one choose the appropriate health checkup?

We offer a variety of health checkup courses to meet our customers’ diverse needs. It is very important to select a course based on your own health condition, lifestyle habits, and family medical history.

Is a medical visa always required to travel to Japan?

For short-term medical services such as health checkups, remote second opinions, or examinations only, it is possible to travel to Japan on a personal tourist visa and receive medical care. However, if long-term treatment is required, we recommend entering Japan with a medical stay visa.
